It’s been a busy couple days!

The past few days have been real fun! We spent a day in Cleveland going to the junkyard, a day relaxing, and a day working on our cars! I got a lot done. I put in a new steering wheel cover cause mine was pretty old and falling apart. I also put in a different shifter from a 98 Windstar. It’s kind of like the Econoline one, but is shorter and doesn’t have that kink in it, so it fits around the wheel better. I bought a new rear view mirror from Nick that I installed too. It has auto-dim and compass features. The compass text is blue, which matches Rex perfectly.

I also put in a center console that Nick brought me up from South Carolina. The part that folds open sits flat on the floor, which I like better than my stock one that came to a rest at a 45 degree angle. The cupholders are also a more reasonable size. It cleaned up real nicely and fits in well. The awesome part about these consoles is that the back folds down for an armrest, or the console can flip closed for a third front-row seat!

I also put in some new door trim. The rubber trim around the edge of the doors on a 96-99 Taurus are painted to match the interior. Mine were obviously old and starting to show a lot of wear, so I replaced them with ones from a 2000+ which are unpainted and black. They look real nice, but you wouldn’t notice the difference unless you were looking for it. I guess that’s a good characteristic for a mod, right? Nick also helped Dave install a driver door handle with a keypad on it, and Anthony a spoiler on his trunk with an LED brake-light. It was a pretty intense day.

Nick left for his 9 hour drive home this morning, and I’ll be heading home Monday morning. Hopefully today and tomorrow we’ll have a good time before I have to head home and get back into the routine of working in the morning and going to bed early… I’m a little worried for myself.

In Pennsylvania…

It’s been a fun couple days so far in Beaver, Pennsylvania. I’m visiting Dave and so is Nick from South Carolina. Anthony and Michelle some over and visit a lot too. It’s super fun. Don’t get me wrong, I miss everybody back home but don’t worry, I’ll see y’all soon enough. Sunday we went out to a junkyard in Cleveland and I picked up this nifty shifter for my car out of an older Econoline conversion van…

That took just about the whole day cause Cleveland is a bit of a drive and we started out rather late in the morning. Then yesterday (Memorial Day) it rained, but we went down to the parking garage and put Dave’s new power antenna in. We also went grocery shopping, George Foreman’d some burgers and hot dogs, and watched She Devil. This morning Dave went out and brought us all back donuts from a place around town that is super good at making donuts… seriously, they were delicious. You can see why at Tim Hortons we have to use pre-made donuts so they don’t turn out all different sizes like this:

Everyone worked on their cars today. Dave got new Cadillac horns installed, Anthony fixed the wiring for his, and I cleaned mine like crazy. I’d say everyone had fun doing it though.

Monday Must Have Been My Lucky Day!

Yesterday must have been my lucky day. Just about everything went right.

I woke up at six am without my alarm going off. Time to go to the junkyard. I went over to Mario’s house and we left from there. We both drive a Taurus and he has a Gen 2 SHO he’s totally redoing. The junkyard we go to is on 8-Mile in Detroit, but it’s worth the drive cause it’s huge. I only need a few things but my interior color is hard to find in good condition for some reason. I’m walking though the yard and there’s the fog light I need, sitting in the engine bay, practically waiting for me! Awesome. I keep walking around and find the door panel I need replaced just sitting in the back seat of a Taurus! Wires disconnected and everything! Perfect! Then I see a Gen 1 Taurus Police Interceptor!!! I grab the grille (which for those who don’t know, has cooling slots on it instead of just being solid) for a total of about 25.00 spent at the junkyard. What’s the most awesome is that the grille is worth about 100 dollars. Ka-ching!

UPDATE: I posted the grille on the Taurus forums at 100 dollars, thinking it would sit for a while and I’d end up getting around 70-80 dollars for it. Totally not the case. It sold for full price in NINE minutes. Wow.

After that, I went out to the Ford Dealership my Dad works at for an oil change. My battery hasn’t been charging either so they put in a new alternator too. They had to get the alternator from a local parts supplier so it’s about an hour or so wait. After Dad and I go out to lunch, the car still isn’t done so I tell Dad I want to go on a test drive. He hooks me up with this guy Chris, who’s son actually graduated from Lake Orion. He lets me test drive a 2010 Taurus SHO.

It’s sooooo nice! I’ve never been in a 2010 Taurus before… which seems like a surprise with as big of a car nut I am. It can really go, and he let me take out out on the freeway which was fun. I especially liked the air conditioned seats cause it was blisteringly hot out. I don’t think I’d ever buy one though… It’s a little hard to see what’s behind you cause it has such a high belt-line.

After that I got a haircut so I’ll be nice and cool when I go to PA on Saturday. I’ll be gone through the 6th so I probably won’t be updating the blog… or maybe I will. Who knows. Oh yeah, and Mom planted the flowers in her chair :)

Work Today was… Insane, To Say the Least.

Going into work today, I already knew it was going to be an adventure. Until last night, we one of the oldest style registers among our network of stores. They have a huge array of buttons with a flip-up screen at the top. There is almost a square foot full of colorful buttons, and then the screen is fairly small and black & white. Here’s an example of one without the buttons labeled:

I wasn’t sure if I’d like the new registers or not just cause I’m so used to the old ones I practically have them memorized. There were a lot of buttons you press and then have to be more specific by typing in a two-digit number off the menu that pops up on the screen. For example, a Sausage Egg & Cheese Breakfast Sandwich Combo with a Fruit Explosion Muffin and a Medium Iced Cappuccino made with chocolate milk…

Sandwich: [Breakfast Combo],
- – - [12] for Breakfast Sandwich Combo,
- – - [11] for Sausage,
Muffin/Side: [Combo Side],
- – - [13] for Muffin,
- – - [Plain] muffin modifier button,
- – - [17] for Fruit Explosion
Iced Capp/Drink: [Combo Drink],
- – - [22] for Sub. Beverage,
- – - [Iced Capp],
- – - [12] for Medium,
- – - [12] for Chocolate Milk

Of course this is one of the biggest issues. If someone gets a sandwich and a drink, then decides “oh, hey! I’ll get a donut and make it a combo!” we have to erase their entire order and start over because you have to choose the combo first. The new registers do all that for you! In fact, they don’t even have a combo option. You just ring in whatever the customer asks for and the computer will say “Hey! That could be a combo, wanna make it one?”. It’s a huge time saver!!! As for remembering where all the buttons are, I’ve gotten pretty good at the register in just one shift. I was on order taker so I was typing in orders all day long, non-stop. Once I found out where everything was, I was a pro.

They really are pretty cool. They’re a lot taller but take up less counter space which is amazing! I can push the register to the back of the counter and stage bags or coffee filters on the counter right where I’m standing, rather that do it on the next counter over like I used to. The only problem is they are kindof wide and it’s hard to fit a plastic tray next to them on the storefront counters. I’m sure we’ll find a way around it. They have a big touch screen with a credit card reader attached right to the side of them. They still have menus you have to go through to choose specific items but they’re organized better and easier to navigate.

That was all expected… then came the unexpected.

We have a few employees that, well… just don’t butter the bread. Today was especially entertaining. Usually it’s just an order gets screwed up, or they have a bad day and need constant attention, or they clock out without getting all their chores finished. We were having a normal day, save for the new registers. A customer points out that there’s a car in the lot with their lights left on. It’s one of the employees. Easy fix, right?… Wrong. She comes back in complaining her brakes didn’t work. He car is accross the parking lot, on the grass, halfway into a shrub.

Our parking lot is a U-shape with the store and a sidewalk down the middle. Cars park up to the sidewalk, facing each other. However, there are more spots on the North side than the South. The South side makes up the distance with a tiny courtyard surrounded by tall shrubs with three wood benches along the edges. What we think happened is that when she went out to turn off her car, she noticed she was parked a little crooked. So she backed out and then when she pulled back into the parking spot, hit the gas instead of the brake. This launched her over the yellow parking block, up onto the grass, across the courtyard, took out a wooden bench that was on posts stuck in the ground, and plowed it into a huge shrub. It was disastrous. She came back in and you can’t blame us for nearly laughing. She got pissed though.

You think it’s over? Not yet!

A few customers later, there is this lady who wants a few sandwiches and drinks. I end up having to go help get the order put in the register correctly (which is a usual occurrence with new people). By the end of the order, the customer is nearly yelling and the manager rushed over. Long story short, the customer was in the store for probably close to 20-30 minutes, and when she got her sandwich asked for it to be reheated in the microwave to melt the cheese. She told the customer to go home and reheat it herself. That basically ended with the manager telling her you keep talking like that and you won’t have a job. She says she doesn’t get paid enough to deal with all this and walks out on the job. She quit. Fun.

On the brighter side, I’ll be close to 40 hours on this week’s payroll. That means my next paycheck should be pretty nice. I do need to save up for going to Pennsylvania at the end of the month..

Mothers Day and Foglights on Rex

Today was mothers day! What did you get your mother?

I got this chair that was falling apart. Then I had Dad help me put it all back together with extra screws and glue so it was nice and sturdy. Then we cut a hole in the middle of it and fit a pot down in the center. We also cut the legs down cause it looked pretty awkward with full length legs.

After that I went after my car. This month is gonna be a lot of work. I’m getting ready for another trek to Pittsburgh to visit Dave, Anthony and Michelle. Nick is also coming up from The South which will be super fun. First on my plan was to take off my “winter” bumper. Then I fixed my airhorn and moved the foglights so they work with the new-er SHO bumper. It has a much sportier look and is in better condition. I’m not done yet, there’s still more to do before I fully put the SHO bumper on but here are some photos of the fog lights:

2011 Ford Edge… in Clio, MI?

Basically, since you’re reading this blog, you must already know I’m obsessive over cars.

Long story short, my friend Aaron and I were heading back home from a day-trip to Davison, MI. I wasn’t really paying much attention to what the oncoming traffic was but all-of-a-sudden, Aaron says “That was weird… Three of the same cars in a row…”

I instantly ask him what they were, he said he didn’t know but they looked new. Needless to say, I had to follow them. It ended up being a group of three 2011 Ford Edge’s! We followed them all the way up through downtown Lapeer, and eventually over to Clio where they stopped to eat at Wendy’s and we decided it was time to head home (for a second time).

I think they look pretty sweet. I love the updated head and tail-lights, but I’m not too excited about the lack of fog lights. They have an led “driving lamp” instead, which is basically just a light for other cars to notice you better, but doesn’t light up the road any. Oh, and I guess I should apologize to the poor drivers that I followed around taking pictures of them. Hahahaha :D

Oh, I also saw some sort of Porsche SUV’s driving around in a group of three about a week before that. I’m guessing it’s a 2011 Cayenne? One last thing is that my friend Mike (who is basically Aaron’s brother) got a caaaa… vehicle finally. It’s a big Chevy G20 van. He loves it! I’ll let you figure out which photo is which:

P- p- p- POLAROID!?!?!

I know I’ve been gone for 6-odd months, but we’re not discussing that right now. We’re Discussing Polaroids…

Yep. Polaroids. They’re back… sorta.

There’s been a long wait ever since Polaroid stopped producing it’s classic “instant film” in 2008. I, for one, am in love with polaroids. I have this old SX-70 camera that used to be my Grandpa’s, and I was devastated when I decided to search for film, that it was discontinued a year earlier.

I was able to find a guy through craigslist that had some extra film left over, but at a dollar per exposure it isn’t the cheapest hobby. I went through two or three packs and still have one more pack of 10 left in the fridge. I also spent a lot of time researching why Polaroid stopped making the film and what was in the future for the film, it’s fans, and Polaroid the company. Last I remember someone was looking to buy the rights, factory, and equipment to recreate the film for enjoyment everywhere :)

Today, Joel tells me that this thing called The Impossible Project has brought back Polaroid film. Here’s the article he sent me, and a link to The Impossible Project’s site:

Article: http://scitech.blogs.cnn.com/2010/03/25/…/
The Impossible Project Site: http://www.the-impossible-project.com/

I have to say, I’m disappointed. I was hoping for at the very least something close to the quality of an old polaroid. And the awful sepia tone? Gross. (Not to mention the price… although once all of the hoarded polaroid film packs get used up, I’ll bet their price goes even higher) At 21 USD for a pack of 8 exposures, not including shipping, I say it’s not worth it.

On the… bright side (?) Polaroid has brought back an instant camera of it’s own. Not sure how long this has been out, but I just discovered it. It’s called the Polaroid PoGo! It’s like those most recent sticker-like polaroids, but this time it’s got an LCD screen to preview pictures (wouldn’t that have been great 10 years ago!) and prints out 2×3 sticky-backed, borderless pictures… It’s pretty cool I suppose. If I had the spare money I would get one. At 200 dollars, it’s not a bad price. 10 bucks for 30 exposures isn’t bad either!

For now though, I’ll just stick to my SX-70 and my one-dollar-each classic polaroids. I think the lovely white border is worth it.

And one of my favorites: A Mustang autocrossing on Belle Isle, Detroit, MI

Fiesta colors!!!

It’s been confirmed! http://media.ford.com/article…=31023

“Hot Magenta” and “Squeeze Green” have been confirmed as colors for the American release of the 2011 Ford Fiesta! I’m so excited. My favorite color is by far Hot Magenta, but Squeeze Green is a close second, tied with Vision (a really really nice shade of blue, almost like a slightly darker sky blue). Although Vision hasn’t been chosen as one of the colors, it’s available on the International version of the Fiesta, and sales of that color are doing great, so maybe it will be released here too! If it is, I might have a hard time choosing. Same thing if they decide to release the Fiesta in the new Mustang’s “Grabber Blue”.

Time to start saving…

School has started!!! Kinda.

Yesterday I didn’t post cause by the time I got home I was DEAD TIRED. I took Aaron’s shift which is 7AM to 5PM. It is also the shift that unloads the delivery truck. So I worked all morning and then went home around 4PM… I worked with Loretta as my supervisor for the first time… everybody says she’s not good to work with and is strict and stuff, but she seemed really nice… soooo idk? Then the guy that stole a bunch of money on Friday night came in and tried to get his paycheck and Loretta got all screamy at him and told him he had to get it from the owner and couldn’t believe that he just walked right in and expected to be paid!?!?!?!

Then after work, I went to Yates Cider Mill and then out to dinner at Outback Steakhouse with Krystle and family… they are moving down to Texas tomorrow!!! :( I also stopped at my cousins house to pick up some graduation gift money… LOL, I found her card a couple days ago with the check still in it! Obviously, the check wasn’t good any more. After that I went to take Dea and Karen the donuts and apple cider I bought them at Yates, and then we hung out for like an hour or so. It was lots of fun, but I was so dead tired… I’m still tired.

Today I woke up at like 6:30 and sat around for a long time, then at 8 I left to go to school!!! YAY!!! Oakland University’s classes are still cancelled due to the teacher strike, but Oakland Community College is open :) So I went down to Farmington Hills for my ceramics class down there. It’s an hour away but the professor at that campus is one of the best, and I really like him. I’m pretty excited for it. We make our own clay from a dry mix and we have a booth to spray glaze onto pots! I’ve never seen or heard of doing that before. It sounds fun. What else is cool is that he booth is specially designed to constantly vent/rinse all the overspray into a speocial container that filters it so it can be reused or disposed of! Super environmentally friendly! Then… I came home! Now I’m about to get ready to go to work again. I get to work with Candace tonight which is usually fun :)
